Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

We worked with SMBW Architects for 5 years in regard to the unique design elements involved to control the light in the museum. The project included over 120 automated devices, including Lutron Shades & Keypads, and Draper Motorized Skylight Shades. All devices are controlled by a centralized shade processor—ShadeWorks. The shade system automates control of Shades to minimize HVAC costs, protect museum displays and provide Total Light Control as well as significant aesthetic enhancements to the building.

Winner of the International Excellence Award for best shade job.

Monticello Visitors Center

On this job we provided motorized solar shades and dual shades for light control in ticket, museum and gallery spaces including AV presentation rooms. Motorized blackout shades were used in theater rooms, set to close and open automatically with the scheduled movie presentations. Motorized shades integrated with Lutron lighting control system for entire campus.

Upon renovation of Thomas Jefferson's Montalto, Specialty was asked to provide automated solar shades and lighting controls for this historic building. Montalto is to be used for educational retreats, seminars, lectures, receptions, seated dinners, and for holding "Jeffersonian Summits".
